Electrochemistry enables renewable electrical energy to be used directly for chemical conversion and separation processes. It offers promising routes to reduce dependence on fossil feedstocks, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and enable more sustainable chemical production.
By supporting the development and application of electrochemical processes, we want to contribute to a chemical industry that is more sustainable and more resilient.
The flex-X-cell platform was initially developed at the Chair of Chemical Process Engineering at RWTH Aachen University, where our team and colleagues worked on a broad range of electrochemical processes, including water electrolysis, CO₂ reduction, ion separation, water treatment, and biomass valorization.
Across different applications and scales, the same need kept recurring: a common cell platform for reliable experiments that could be adapted quickly to different processes and scaled as requirements evolved. More than 50 cells for different applications and scales were built at the chair, with the design continuously improved based on first-hand experimental experience and feedback from our colleagues.
FXC Engineering was founded in 2023 to make the platform available beyond RWTH. Since then, we have continued to develop the flex-X-cell based on the experience gained over the previous years. In 2026, we introduced a new, optimized generation of the platform that builds on the proven concept while incorporating numerous improvements in design and usability.
