Configurable architecture
flex-X-cell is built around a standardized platform with interchangeable components. Start from an application-specific standard configuration and adapt the cell architecture, flow path, materials and internal components as your requirements evolve.
Standard Applications: PEM, AEM, elektrodialysis, electrosynthesis, CO₂ reduction (zero-gap, GDE) or alkaline electrolysis.
Select flow fields, flow frames, electrode and membrane frames, materials and electrode configurations to match your process and operating conditions.
Alternative active areas, flow-field geometries, materials, coatings and application-specific components are available on request.

Reliable operation
flex-X-cell combines robust sealing, precisely manufactured components and application-specific material options to support reliable operation and well-defined reaction conditions.
O-rings and defined sealing edges concentrate the sealing force where it is needed. Every cell is quantitatively leak-tested at 5 bar before delivery.
Rigid stainless-steel end plates and tight manufacturing tolerances support uniform compression and pressure distribution across the active area.
Different metals and polymer materials are available to match the wetted flow path to your chemical environment, temperature and operating conditions.

Scalable design
flex-X-cell supports electrochemical process development from small-scale laboratory experiments to larger active areas and stacked configurations. A consistent cell architecture and compatible materials help transfer experimental concepts between scales.
Standard sizes cover active areas of 5 cm² (S), 25 cm² (M), 100 cm² (L) and 300 cm² (XL). Smaller, larger and application-specific active areas are available on request.
The platform supports multi-cell stacks with bipolar or monopolar operation. Up to 20 cells can be combined in standard configurations, with larger stacks available on request.
A consistent design approach, geometric similarity and comparable material choices across cell sizes support the transition from laboratory experiments to larger-area and pilot-scale evaluation.

Efficient handling and integration
flex-X-cell is designed for repeated assembly, component exchange and integration into laboratory setups. The cell opens at a defined position, while major components and connectors remain in place for easier access and faster reassembly.
Electrodes and membranes can be exchanged without completely rebuilding the cell setup, reducing handling time and potential assembly errors.
Different options for fluid connections and electrical contact make it easier to integrate the cell into existing experimental setups and workflows.
The sealing concept requires only a small border around the active area, helping reduce the amount of electrode and membrane material required.

Built on years of operating experience
The flex-X-cell platform has been used in electrochemical research and process development and has been applied in numerous scientific publications across a range of electrochemical processes. In 2026, we introduced an updated design incorporating feedback and practical experience from previous generations.
The current generation combines the established
flex-X-cell concept with refinements developed from years of use across different applications.
Previous-generation flex-X-cell systems remain supported. Cells, components and replacement parts continue to be available for existing setups.
Standard configurations
We offer flex-X-cell in 6 configurations for the most frequent applications. However, flex-X-cell it's modular and scalable nature makes it highly customizable - adaptable to any process
