This page provides general safety and compliance information for current products supplied by FXC Engineering GmbH, including flex-X-cell electrochemical cells, related components and accessories, and customised cell configurations.
This information does not replace the product-specific assembly instructions, operating information, quotation, technical documentation or safety instructions supplied with the respective Product.
Where product-specific documentation contains requirements or operating limits that differ from the general information on this page, the product-specific documentation shall take precedence.
FXC Products are intended for professional use in:
research, development, industrial electrochemical applications and higher-education laboratories.
Products shall be assembled and operated only by appropriately trained personnel or under the supervision of appropriately trained personnel.
FXC Products are not intended for private or household use.
The user is responsible for integrating the Product into a safe experimental or industrial system and for assessing hazards arising from the user's process, chemicals, gases, electrical equipment and other connected components.
Before assembling, commissioning, operating, maintaining or opening an FXC cell, users shall observe the product-specific documentation and appropriate laboratory or industrial safety procedures.
In particular:
Improper assembly or operation may result in leakage of gases or liquids, electrical faults, sparking, ignition, damage to equipment or other hazardous conditions.
Current standard FXC cells do not have a generally published maximum allowable operating pressure.
Unless a product-specific quotation or technical document expressly specifies an allowable operating pressure, FXC cells shall be operated without intentional additional system pressurisation.
The fact that an individual cell or component has been tested experimentally at a particular pressure does not establish that pressure as an approved maximum operating pressure.
The overall system must be designed so that unintended pressure build-up cannot exceed the limits of the respective Product and connected equipment.
Current standard cells do not incorporate an independent pressure-relief or overpressure-protection device. Where the user's setup may generate pressure, the user is responsible for providing suitable external pressure monitoring, pressure limitation and/or pressure-relief measures appropriate to the application.
Pressure-equipment requirements depend on the specific design, maximum allowable pressure, internal volume, fluids and configuration. Customised cells, pressurised configurations and in particular stacked systems may therefore require a separate pressure-equipment assessment.
The maximum permissible operating temperature of a cell depends on the complete Product configuration and is always determined by the component or material with the lowest applicable temperature limit.
Current material-specific reference limits include:
EPDM components: up to 80 °C
PTFE components: up to 120 °C
PMMA viewing window: up to 80 °C
These values are material-related limits and shall not be interpreted as a general temperature rating for every FXC cell.
Other components, materials, seals, electrodes, coatings or customised parts may require lower operating temperatures.
The applicable operating limit for the complete Product shall therefore be determined from the product-specific configuration and documentation.
Where a cell is equipped with an optional PMMA viewing window, the window is not intended to be in direct contact with the process medium.
The PMMA viewing window must not be cleaned with solvents.
Clean the viewing window with water only.
Exposure of PMMA to unsuitable solvents or chemicals may cause cracking, degradation or material failure.
FXC does not supply the chemicals, electrolytes, solvents or process gases used by the Customer unless expressly agreed otherwise.
FXC does not provide a general compatibility statement covering all possible chemicals, solvents, electrolytes or gases.
The user is responsible for verifying the compatibility of all wetted materials with the intended media and operating conditions unless FXC has expressly confirmed compatibility for the specific Product configuration.
Material compatibility may depend on factors including concentration, temperature, pressure, exposure time, electrical potential and interactions between different materials or media.
The user remains responsible for the safe storage, handling and use of chemicals and gases employed in the user's process and for compliance with the applicable safety data sheets and workplace-safety requirements.
Current standard FXC electrochemical cells contain passive electrical contacts and current collectors.
The electrochemical cell itself is intended for operation with direct current and a maximum voltage of 50 V DC, unless a lower product-specific limit applies.
The user is responsible for ensuring that external power supplies, potentiostats, cables, connectors and other electrical equipment are suitable for the intended current, voltage and operating conditions.
Planned electrically active accessories, such as heating equipment or sensor systems, are not covered by the current compliance statements on this page. Such products will be subject to a separate product-specific compliance assessment before being placed on the market.
Current FXC Products are not ATEX-certified unless expressly stated otherwise in product-specific documentation.
No general claim is made that FXC Products are suitable for operation as equipment intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
Where the Customer's process involves hydrogen, oxygen, flammable gases, volatile solvents or other substances capable of creating an explosive atmosphere, the Customer is responsible for assessing the complete installation and implementing the required protective measures.
The presence of such substances in an electrochemical process shall not be interpreted as an ATEX certification or approval of the Product.
CE marking is applied only where required by the legislation applicable to the respective Product and configuration.
Current passive FXC cell Products are not CE-marked.
No general statement that a Product is exempt from CE-related legislation solely because it is used for research shall be inferred from this page.
The applicability of EU product legislation depends on the specific design, intended use and technical characteristics of the respective Product.
Electrically active accessories, stacked systems, customised products and other future configurations may therefore be subject to different regulatory requirements and shall be assessed separately.
FXC does not currently make a general portfolio-wide claim of RoHS compliance or REACH compliance. Product-specific information may be provided where such an assessment has been carried out.
FXC cells are marked with an identification corresponding to the respective FXC order number.
This identification allows the Product to be associated with the relevant order and product configuration in FXC's documentation.
The identification should not be removed or made illegible during the service life of the Product.
12. Product Documentation
FXC supplies assembly information, including an exploded assembly drawing, and operating and safety information with its Products.
The documentation supplied with the respective Product shall be followed during assembly and operation.
Users shall ensure that personnel operating or maintaining the Product have access to the applicable documentation.
FXC may update product documentation as Products and safety information develop. Where there is uncertainty regarding the applicable documentation for a particular Product, please contact FXC and provide the corresponding order number.
Operating limits, material compatibility and the applicable compliance status may differ for customised Products.
For customised Products, the product-specific quotation, technical documentation and safety instructions take precedence over general information provided on this website.
Operating conditions or compliance statements applicable to a standard Product shall not automatically be assumed to apply to a customised configuration.
Changes to the Product, its flow configuration, electrical connections, seals, structural components or other design features may affect safety, sealing performance, material compatibility and regulatory compliance.
Unauthorised modifications are therefore made outside the Product configuration assessed and supplied by FXC.
The Customer is responsible for assessing the effects of third-party components, modifications or integration into a larger system unless FXC has expressly approved the respective configuration.
Products returned to FXC for inspection, repair, service or other purposes must be fully drained, cleaned and decontaminated before shipment.
All hazardous chemicals, electrolytes, gases, biological agents and other hazardous substances must be removed.
FXC may require written confirmation describing the substances previously used with the Product and confirming that the Product has been adequately decontaminated.
FXC reserves the right to refuse acceptance or handling of a Product where contamination may present a risk to its employees, carriers or other persons.
Customers should contact FXC before returning a Product in order to receive the applicable return and safety instructions.
